which are better for the reef. I heard one will disturb the corals when they get larger. Any help would be appreciated

Neither will bother corals (other than climbing over them now and then) but blue legs are aggressive towards other hermits and snails. IMO get the scarlets. :D

I have had both, some say the Scarlets clean better I am not sure. They never seemed to last as long as the blue legs though.....maybe they were killed by the blues?

What about Zebra Hermits? The little left handed buggers.
Would they be ok with blue legs?
I also have a Halloween hermit but he is big enough nothing bothers him.
(Figured there was no sence in starting a new topic just for this.)
Thanks :hilarious

Blue-legs very very bad!! They attacked and killed all my snails. I sent them to SW prison with a life sentence and no parole.

I've seen my zebra kill on more than one occasion, and I now I have a scarlet in a bumble bee shell, Guess he wanted it a little more.

Blue legged hermits are sh*t disturbers they piss my corals off all the time . I would only go with the scarlet red as the blues also eat my snails all the time. Also my pistol shrimp tears up my poor red seastar!!

Those of you that have had the blue-legged hermits, do you have extra shells so that they have shells to grow into? I have 2 BLH's in my 20g and they have never went for the snails. I also have 5-6 extra shells in there for them to grow into and they have been using them instead of killing the snails.

I always keep extra shells in the tank for my hermits.
I have heard that ANY kind of hermit will kill a snail if it needs the shell becuase its current one is too small.

This is true...but blue legs will kill just for the heck of it. It's up to the individual to have them or not. :D

and eveyone who replied---red legged and scarlets are two different hermits. Red legged are right under blue legged for personality. Scarlets are more doctile, and a good choice for a reef, IMO. You still need to have extra shells provided for the scarlets to grow into, but they will not "kill" for the heck of it--they will search for a new empty shell. Just wanted to clarify.

I've had both in my tank for almost 5 years. And,they are all the originals I dropped in.The scarlets are probably the better of the to.They seem more docile than the blues. The blues are more agressive and crawl on everything. But try to remember that crabs are opportunists, and will always be on the look out for a meal. They will eat snails if they can't get enough of something else.I have always been confused as to why it is said to add ton of hermit crabs to a new tank.I know you need a cleanup crew, but when they run out of food....I hope I don't stir something up by saying that.It is just my opinion.I have always added just 1 crab per 5gal. on a new tank.Anyway,I would look for the scarlets first.
