Hello, I have a 100 gallon tank, and can I keep a blue ribbon eel? I heard they are hardy, but another person said they weren't. Can someone tell me how they are?
Hi, forget the ribbon eel. They have a low survival rate. 99% oof these beautiful eels die within the first month. They usualy starve to death, refusing all food. While others escape through the open cracks of a tank. Don't buy this extremely delicate eel.
Well, I don't think that it's a problem of hardiness, which they might be hardy, but it's the fact that they do not eat. It could be the hardiest fish on earth, and it would still starve to death.

From what I have heard, they are hardy fish but, they don't eat in captivity. From what I have read on these eels, they are planktivores (sp.?) and actually eat too much of the plankton in your water and when that food source runs out its either eat or die. Most choose to die. I did read and article where someone kept one alive for 3 years in a very large reef tank (1000 gal.) which isnt that long really.. They arent worth buying because of this fact. The LFS I work at never stocks them and I havent heard success from any customers who bought them at other stores.
I have had a Black ribbon eel now for over a year and a half with no problems. He is very hardy. I have never had any problems with him eating. I feed him guppies, goldfish, and squid, silversides, etc.. I don't believe I am one lucky person out of 100 to keep one of these. If you have any other questions you can e-mail me.
