Bonded pairs

We talk a lot about bonded or mated clownfish pairs. I saw a bonded pair of orange shoulder tangs at my LFS (BEAUTIFUL!!). I was told the owner bought two small juvis a couple of years ago. Is this something we can do? I mean, could I buy (theoretically if I had a large enough tank) two small juvi tangs and possibly end up with a bonded pair? I didn't know if this worked on tangs kindof like it does for clownfish (she beats him into submission or vice versa). Also, what else can you get a bonded pair of? What about butterfly fish?

I think that your LFS made up the term, "bonded pair". If they are not a mated pair then all you are really talking about is a couple of fish that school together. Tangs do this all the time. So do many damsels, anthias, idols, and several other fish. I'm not sure about butterflies. I think your LFS guy used the term "bonded pair" as a way to boost the price and sound ultra-smart.

It's a male and female orange shoulder tang (or at least that's what they say, I'll try to get pics) ... been together for 2-3 years. Maybe they just hang out together / are accepting of one another / are best buddies
, but I think it's kinda cool to see two fish like that interact.
The LFS is asking $150 for the two, a price very close to SWF.com's price for two (they're around 5-6 inches - no tape measure here).
I'd like to replicate something like that if I could.

The way fish act in the confines of a lfs tank, shortly after capture, packing, trasfer, etc; probably isn't the way they they act in a much larger DT. Almost all scared or stressed fish (Or most animals, for that matter) will stay close to their own kind for a while. Just like the accounting geeks at the big office party .
