Bought a new house with a 1500gl aquarium

I went house shopping in i found my house. Besides having windows covering every side of the house, there ia a 1500gl aquarium dividing the front room from the Family room. The pump is still attched, some type of RO/DI setup and a complete water change system. The owner also through in the computer that keeps tracks of the water levels. He drained this tank after his heart surgery and never messed with it again. I need to find out what i need to do to find out if i can turn this into a huge reef tank. How much Sand, Live rock, best fiultration system, heating, and skimmers. The person i bought the house from his brother works at a fish store in Florida. he is willing to sell me LR at 2.00lb and bring it to me for free when he comes to visit in june. So can anyone help?

thast going to cost a lot to maintain salt, ro water, additives ect.. I would like to see pics. Is it long and skinny or tall or deep and shallow? If I made somthing like that a reef I would make a reef outcrop at one half and then open water swimming area at the rest, I would also start a charter diving service for $20/head to offset the cost. :hilarious

Congrats, boy did you get lucky there! An auspicious project for sure, but you will no doubt have a blast. Be sure to share lots of pics with us! Congrats again!!

Wow thats going to be one heck of a tank.I don't have your tank dimensions but if you go by the rule of 1lb of sand per gallon for a 2" sandbed you would probably need 1500 POUNDS of sand alone.I would do a double island effect for the live rock.1500lbs+live rock.I would put the biggest sump that fit in the space provided(Incorporate a fuge to the sump).Skimmer and heater same thing, one or as many skimmers/heaters rated for a tank of that size.
One heck of project.
Best of Luck

I measured it this morning and i got 10ft long-5ft wide and 4ft deep. The lights that are hooked up are MH but i'm not quite sure the wattage. As soon as im able i'm going to fill it up with water to check for leaks and i'l let everyone know what i come up with.

loan to fix that up, lol. That will take a TON to setup and maintain. Also I would make sure there are no cracks in the tank or leaks for sure as 1500 gallons of water would be a disaster if you didn't drown first

I had time and i filled up my tank with regular water and by surprise there were no cracks. I'm letting the water circulate for a while to see if the inside can get some of the algae off the sides. I tried to pst pics but its telling me i cant post pics that big, how do you post pics?

Well get em resized and post them then! If you dont have a program you can google IRFRANVIEW and they have a freeware prog you can download that works well and is easy to use (under "resize").
