Well first of all you cant use make up the extra 40 gal with RO because it will lower you salinity. You need to make new saltwater. If you used copper I would use brand new water. I dont know about the rocks and the sand though?

How far into the future? Copper is removable with enough time. If you are looking to move to a reef in say... a year or so, then you have plenty of time to get rid of the copper.
If you have enough time, then transfer everything over, including all of the system water, and make up the difference with newly mixed, aged saltwater.
Then, run activated carbon and polyfilters in your filtration system for the next year. When a polyfilter turns green, replace it, and keep doing this until they stop turning green. Once they stop turning green, add a few cheap inverts, such as blueleg hermits, a condy anemone, perhaps a brittle star.
If those things live for at least a few months, then you are good to go!

i can't remember what's wrong with it, but that rock will have the copper in it forever and you cannot use it with certain fish or corals. so you should probably just end up junking it.
Thats not true.

I used copper in my tank around 8 months ago and switched to a reef tank in 2 months ago with no problems. The only real problem is it killed all the life in my LR.
