I broke down finally and bought a unit this weekend. Its from a large LFS and is sold as a 3 stage unit, the little booklet shows a diagram of the unit which has 2 canisters, a membrane, carbon and DI canister. I got it all hooked up and running. I dump my waste water into the washer to do a load of laundry every so often. The DI chamber has black stuff in i that is turning red, is that normal? I am guessing that means it is working. I tested the water coming out and got zero chlorine so I suppose its doing that part. What else can you do with the waste water? Is is ok for pet consumption? Watering plants?
I started filling my tub, the waste water flows right out while the clean water trickles, I am assuming that is correct as well?

I think the DI resin changes color when it needs replacing. As for drinking the waste water I'm not sure but I think it has higher concentrations of bad stuff so it might not be a good idea. It's probably fine to water plants and it's ok to wash clothes, take bath, etc. And the waste line will flow while the clean water trickles.
