BP/Obama/Spill

this company is a piece of crap! why is everyone fooled into believeing they are the only ones capable of stopping this leak? first a giant heavy cap, then mud, golf balls, and more mud and golf balls. real high tech! Obama isn't handling this situation up to my standards at all. he needs to call in every available resource at his disposal, which is pretty much everyone in the world. i bet the Saudi's know something about oil and rigs. what about the friggin army engineers or nasa scientists, you telling me they couldn't come up with something better than mud and golfballs? why isn't the navy there? couldn't they atleast aid in clean up efforts? send the bill to BP, plain and simple.
i think BP should be held on criminal charges! they lied every step of the way. first about the size of the leak and the amout of oil spilling out of it. they lied on their estimates of these ideas working. they said it was a 60 to 70% chance that both the cap, top kill, and junk shot would work. odds are one would work right? they dont want anyone near that rig because people will go to jail. they are trying these cheap mundane ideas because they have no intention of paying for the total cost of clean up and lost wages. they will dig a second well and thats it, thats August. thats when the leak will totally stop unless Obama kicks them out of there and brings in a team of smart people. it may cost BP 1 or 2 billion, but thats chump change for a company that made 6 billion in profit last quarter. this is BS! your thoughts are welcome....

Dude! Calm down
There is a big difference between lying and being wrong. The government wasn't exactly close on their own estimates as to the size of the spill and BP nor anyone else knew if these different ideas for stopping the flow was going to work.
BP has every incentive in the world to stop the leak ASAP and if you don't think they've contacted every other company/agency in the world looking for ideas you're crazy.
Obama and the Democrats are now getting a taste of what Bush went through with Katrina but not much of one yet. There isn't much the government can do about the well but I do think there is more they could do with clean up. I would have given the go ahead for those sand berms the states wanted right out of the gates instead of waiting 3 weeks to green light some of them. Beats doing nothing and letting the marshes get killed.

This whole thing makes me crazy. I can't even look at it anymore. They did lie in the the beginning. They knew who much oil that thing is capable of spewing and they down played it until people started figuring it out. They didn't want anyone in their business. There will be lots of charges brought to TransOcean and BP you can be sure. That rig has some bad history and I think employees are probably more than happy to have it come out. All the more reason to have these rigs gone over with a fine tooth comb and maybe they all need new "back up" plans.
Im with reef on this, everyone wants this shut down, but 5000 feet under water makes it a tad difficult. Obama will never udder negative words again against Bush and help for Katrina or lack thereof. He is now walking the walk and he knows the enormity of this and can't do a damned thing about it. Can't and won't are very different. I don't know what the hold up is on the sand berms, but Army Corp of Eng may be telling them it could take a lot of time also. Time is something we don't have, but we get to sit back a watch this train wreck.
All the more reason to keep our drilling above ground in Alaska.

Do you really think if we just driller for oil in Alaska that that oil produced would equal the demand that we as people need to survive with everyday products. Not even close. We would probably have to increase oil import from foreign countries. you want that?
These disastors are only going to get worse year by year for a couple reasons. The many reason is because the population of the USA is increasing year by year. Here is a list of products that require crude oil or refined crude oil :
Fuels - like gasoline, diesel, propane (many people use propane to heat their homes), heating oil
Heavy bottoms - like asphalt, bitumen, tar
Petrochemicals - used as a feedstock for many everyday products:
•plastic gadgets, tools, bags, toys
•candles
•clothing (polyester, nylon)
•hand lotions
•petroleum jelly
•perfume
•dishwashing liquids
•ink
•bubble gums
•car tires
•ammonia
•heart valves
•and many more

[hr]
Crude oil is refined and used to make all these products:
•Ethane and other short-chain alkanes which are used as fuel
•Diesel
•Fuel oils
•Petrol
•Jet fuel
•Kerosene
•Liquid petroleum gas (LPG)
•Natural gas
•Alkenes (olefins) which can be manufactured into plastics or other compounds
•Lubricants (produces light machine oils, motor oils, and greases, adding viscosity stabilizers as required).
•Wax, used in the packaging of frozen foods, among others.
•Sulfur or Sulfuric acid. These are a useful industrial materials. Sulfuric acid is usually prepared as the acid precursor oleum, a byproduct of sulfur removal from fuels.
•Bulk tar.
•Asphalt
•Petroleum coke, used in speciality carbon products or as solid fuel.
•Paraffin wax
•Aromatic petrochemicals to be used as precursors in other chemical production
Can we as a society live without these products. Nope.

Reef, they totally lied about the amount of oil. they said 200,000 gallons a day it's more like 100,000 barrels a day. already its 2 to 3x the exxon spill. i doubt they have gone outside there company for help and i haven't heard anywhere that they have. that rig was a piece of junk with several violations. it was shut down 3 times right before it blew. they were violating safety codes and dont want anyone near that thing. BP has recieved thousands of calls and emails from private companies and citizens with great ideas and products to clean up the oil, how many have they tried? a guy was on CNN and showed how processed spagnum moss can absorb the oil from the surface. it's 100% natural and biodegradable. Kevin Cosner the actor has a company that builds giant skimmers like we use in our tanks that spins the water and seperates the oil. it can clean thousands of gallons a day. BP sent clean up crews to the shore for Obama's visit, when he left they left. it was only for show. their army of lawyers will insure that there is a max fine of 1 or 2 billion and us the tax payers will pay the rest.
i dont like the Katrina comparison because of the human life that was lost. 2000 versus 11. Katrina was on land and much easier to deal with. it wasn't caused by a private company and we had warning that it was coming. to be fair i dont like how either President handled these catastrophies.
those marshes are gone. it's gonna take decades for them to come back, and we dont know what the hydrocarbons are gonna do to the phytoplankton and other bottom of the food chain creatures. it could severely damage sea-life globally. enjoy your holiday ttyl....

Dude, chill out. The other majors are involved. BP is currently testing Costner little centerfuge. And from a couple stories I've read you maybe right as far is some bp people getting criminally charged. The problem is this technologically is space exploration in the 1970's. Nuclear technology or jet aviation during the 40's and 50's. BP has every reason to solve this asap. As far as Obama if you read in the other thread you'll see my views on that.

Nobody, and I mean nobody can say how much oil is coming out of that thing. If BP intentionally undercut the size of the leak it was really, REALLY stupid because they would have messed with the clean up effort had they been able to stop the leak quick. As far as thousands of people calling with ideas for cleaning it up they should have been getting their ideas out there BEFORE a spill so they could actually be tested. How long would it take to go through all those ideas to see which are actually viable? Do you really think they should be spending their time reading e-mails from folks with clean up ideas they more than likely want to sell them or work on what they know best how to do which is cap the well? The government will be running the clean up effort, at BP's expense, and I am all for them looking at some of these ideas. Costners little pin wheels might actually be big enough to clean out some smaller marshes but are too small to have a great impact.
As far as comparisons go yes, with Katrina there was a warning which is why Bush offered to deploy the national guard BEFORE the storm hit and the governor rejected to offer. And don't even get me started on the mayor of NO.

relax, I am not saying its the answer. Until the world starts to figuer out alternative ways, and IMO we already have somewhere, but it has been shelved so we all could make nice the the new people overseas. (years ago obviously) and no one wants to put a decent price tag anything alternative.
This just happened to be a headline in our paper yesterday.
