I think sand too but it needs light. Also depends on the brain. A small trachyphyllia could be placed on the rocks but a wellsophyllia probably wouldn't do well since it expands more.

i have a very large open brain coral..about 3 days after puttig it in my tank it hasnt opened i have tried moving should i put it on the rocks??

If there is a direct strong current, they wont open. Make sure it is getting good strong lighting from your MH and make sure its not getting direct current. And look to see if it is damaged.
