breakin time on RO/DI units?

My Kent Max60HiS arrived today. The manual says to discard the first 10-12 gallons of filtered water... is that sufficient?

Do a phosphate test on the water. My first water from the RO unit was very high, then after I ran out a few gallons (like sugggested in the manual that came with it) the phosphate test came out showing none.
