I have had a 2000gal koi pond for several years. i have comets, shubunkins, regular goldfish, koi, and butterfly koi in my pond. My shubinkins and goldfish have had babies, but not my koi. I have heard that you could somehow induce spawning in an aquarium, and raise the fry. How would I do that? To have babies, you obviusly need a male and a female, so how do you tell if a fish is a boy or girl? What do i feed the fry? If you have bred pond fish, could you please tell me how you went about doing that?

xabxam you probably wont find much help here since it is saltwater forum. i do have a pond and know a thing or two about koi(but have never bred them) so here it goes.
1. it is hard to --- them since the only way to do this is by looking at shape but if they are full grown and in breeding condition then you can tell the difference because females are much rounder and males are slimer.
2. if you want the eggs to survive you should take the koi that you chouse out and put them in a pond or large kiddie pool the water should be about double the height of the biggest koi
3. you will need to buy this special breeding ring that looks like a donut made of hair algea.
4. very specific steps have to be taken now and i dont want to get them wrong so i wont say what they are.
5. once the deed is done thepair will need to be taken to two other different kiddie pools (one for each) so that they can recuperate for a day or two.
6. keep the fry tank water about 2-5 degrees hotter than the outside temp. and feed them on fry food.
7. let the fry be reared here until they are to big to be eaten.
disclaimer: like i mentioned i have never done this i probably got stuff wrong so do extra reaserch before attempting this endeavor on my help alone.
the first one is of a female and the second is of a male.
here is a website with nothing to sell. has a lot of info about koi thou http://www.byteline.com.au/koi/
