Whom (aka what) might the attacker (of my ex-Royal Gramma) be? One of the Hermits? Some unknown? Thanks for your posts btw.

sounds to me like it may be the damsels, do they bother him during the day, they are normally fairly peaceful at night, but will chase alot during the day,
OR it is very possible that you got an undesirable hichhiker, such as a crab, or mantis shrimp, what kind of rock do you have?fiji, fla.
these are2 possiblities,
and as for the flashlight, you can use a red lense cover to hunt, red llights don't project a beam,a nd if you are hunting a mantis, the light may scare him before you can see him, they can be sly and fast
but i would go hunting, because i would not do anything else before i knew who the culprit was andtook care of it
i just re read, i guess it probably was not the damsel, and seeing how much was gone, not only the fins, my money's on a shrimp(but it could still be anything, i'd hate to say it, but all fingers say it very well could be, look hard, if it is, get him out(trap or something, don't use your hands, they have nasty appendages) , these guys can kill a tank, especially the rock dwellers and fish that lay on or near the bottom at night
