Brittle Star

I'd like a second opinion on my brittle starfish... the little guy has hollowed out a cave under my tank's biggest rock and he pretty much sits in here ALL day and night! He seems to constantly be starving too... He eats with my fish every day, sending arms out to grab formula 1 and formula 2 pellet food. I've been sending him down large chunks of krill and mysis but my perc's keep stealing it away from my grabber though I know he gets some of it.
Shouldn't he come out at night and explore? I thought they were nocturnal. He lets large pods run all over him which ticks me off... he did defend himself against a nipping Coral Beauty by thwapping it but he lets those pods just crawl all over him, gives me the heebies.
One other thing he did was to pull an empty mexican turbo shell over the hole in his cave so he can barely squeeze out... is he scared do you think? Or can they not rationalize like that? I love that starfish, he's my favorite addition but I'd like to see him once in a while.

I had one in my tank for months I never saw it except for an occasional arm or 2. I finally had to get rid of him because he got too big for my tank. I would just let it be, they scavange for just about anything. I doubt it is starving but wont turn a free meal away.
