Brooklynella question

Six months ago I bought 2 clowns at my lfs and didn't quarantine them. They died within 24 hours. Two weeks later the store gave us two more clowns and the same thing happened. The pictures I see here are the same things I saw on the fish. A film like texture around the gills and eyes plus heavy breathing. Three months have passed si its been empty except 4 hermit crabs and 4 snails. Last week I put a damsel in the tank and so far so good. Is the parasite gone? Can the damsel get sick from this if it was still present? I would like to get another clown but I am afraid the parasite is still in the tank.
I do notice alot of string like materal on the rocks that move with current but shrink in size from time to time. What is this?
Thanks for any help

Brooklyella is dead in the tank by now. Cycle a quarantine tank for your next clowns. Pick up some formalin. Brooklynella can be treated if it is caught early. Take a look at Beth's Common Treatments FAQ located at the top of Disease and Treatment for directions on the dip.
