Broomer or anyone....

Broomer,
To pick up where we left off. I got the holes drilled in my stand and various other stuff. I have glued together my piping and getting ready to attach the flex line. ( I really like this idea means I can move it or do what ever. I did not however make a spray bar but I have all the measurements to make one if I need to. My question now is how can I go to my sump ( 30 gallon) with little to no noise. I love the ocean but I don't need one in my living room... Any DIY ideas to muffle down the water flow? I have read on a previous post not to put the inlet below the water line in the sump. Any help would be appreciated. ( I hope to have pics soon I will post them then )

Hi Rapt0r32
Yes I remember your set up ( pretty much at least ).
If your drain lines are going down vertical into the sump, like in using pvc pipe, some folks will add a ball valve to restrict the drain flow somewhat - which helps to eliminate some of the air coming down the drainline from actually reaching the sump. The air sort of rises back up the vertical leg and escapes out the top of the overflow. Sorta.
If using flexline for the drain, I find that running it to the top surface of my sump with half the end of the drain line under the surface of the sump water level, and the other half open to the air. Water runs down the gently slope of the flex, on the bottom of the flexline, and any air flows out the top portion of this pipe.
Unfortunately, I am finding that as my sump water level drops some due to natural evaporation, it becomes a little more noisy until I top off with freshwater.
I am sort of fiddling with this this weekend too, and added yet another pump to my sump, which is compounding this problem somewhat.
I'll figure it out eventually though, and someday soon after I do my new lighting I'll be able to start adding some new corals.
The tank's only 3 months old - so now's the time I see to be tinkering around with all these DIY projects, while the tank matures a bit more.
Maybe some other folks here can help us both.

Since I am waiting on some more money before my LR gets bought I am considering doing a wet run with just FW so if I have anything go wrong there is now salt or anything in my tank. I am using flex all the way down. I did however had to hard pipe the over flow about 4 inches so I could get busings and adpt. to go to flex. What you were saying half in water half out seems to make some sense. I think I still have a long way to go....I just hopes this works because I am no Tim Taylor....

Super good idea on the freshwater wet run.
Hopefully it will go flawlessly - but if there should be a small leak or some minor rearranging to be done - great time to take care of it !!
Have a good one - keep posting.
Later on
