THE SOURCE OF THE SILICATES MUST BE IDENTIFIED AND ELIMINATED, IT TOOK ME 6 MONTHS TO FIND OUT IT WAS THE SALT AND NOT THE LIGHT. IN ORDER TO GET RID OF THE PRESENT BROWN ALGAE BLOOM AND PREVENT FUTURE OUTBREAKS. REMOVE ANY BUILDERS SAND, PLAY SAND OR OTHER MATERIALS FROM YOUR TANK WHICH DID NOT COME FROM THE OCEAN. USE ONLY RO OR RO/DI WATER WHETHER YOU PURCHASE AN RO/DI UNIT OR PURCHASE RO/DI WATER FROM A COMMERCIAL SOURCE.
CHECK TO SEE IF YOUR COMMERCIAL SEA SALTS CONTAIN HIGH LEVELS OF SILICATES. THAT WAS THE PROBLEM I HAD.
REMOVING THE SILICATES ALONE FROM YOUR TANK WILL ELIMINATE THE BROWN ALGAE PROBLEM. BUT, AS LONG AS YOU ARE GETTING YOUR TANK IN ORDER, YOU MIGHT AS WELL GET USED TO DEALING WITH NITRATES. THIS WOULD BE A GOOD TIME FOR YOU TO ESTABLISH A GOOD TANK MAINTENANCE ROUTINE WHICH INCLUDES KEEPING NITRATE LEVELS AT A MINIMUM. NITRATES WILL ALWAYS BE SOMETHING TO CONTEND WITH IN YOUR TANK. FOR FAST, IMMEDIATE REDUCTION, YOU CAN DO A WATER CHANGE, USING THE INSTANT NITRATE REDUCTION METHOD. THIS WILL REDUCE YOUR NITRATES AT THE FASTEST RATE, USING THE LEAST AMOUNT OF TIME AND WATER. THIS WILL ALSO GET YOUR NITRATES DOWN TO A WORKABLE (10 MG/L AREA) LEVEL BUT IT IS ONLY A BANDAID AND DOES NOTHING TO REMOVE THE SOURCE OF THE NITRATES. SIPHON OUT AS MUCH OF THE BROWN ALGAE AS POSSIBLE. YOU WILL PROBABLY FIND THAT YOU WILL HAVE TO USE SEVERAL OTHER METHODS (MANY OF WHICH AREPART OF A GOOD AQUARIUM MAINTENANCE ROUTINE) TO KEEP YOUR NITRATES IN CHECK.
 CHECK TO SEE IF YOUR COMMERCIAL SEA SALTS CONTAIN HIGH LEVELS OF AMMONIA/NITROGEN.
 PURCHASE AND USE A GOOD "NITRATE SPONGE".
 SIPHON UNEATEN FOOD AND OTHER LOOSE MATERIAL (DETRITUS) FROM THE SUBSTRATE.
 PERFORM PERIODIC WATER CHANGES.
BY REDUCING THE NITRATE AND SILICATE LEVELS, YOUR TANK WILL SOON BE HEALTHY AND FREE OF THE BROWN ALGAE.

I had a bad case of brown algea/diatoms too. Did not think I was going to win the battle. Bought a tap water purifier from Aquarium pharmacueticals and Phos Zorb and Kent Phosphate sponge and the brown stuff literally went away. I had to do one last cleaning of the glass and of the bottom and it is gone. It's been gone for over two weeks now.
Try the phos Zorb and or phosphate sponge as they will remove silicates too. But definitly use a filtered water source!
Hope if helps!

We have a self cleaning tank withh lots of live rock. Too much brown algea is unnatractive and means phosphates are higher than should be. A phosphate sponge is helpful, emloy that in the sub tank or where you have lots of current. I have well water and that is my source. Aside from that when I clean my front and sides and my corals love the stuff! Don't go crazy with chemicals. Get critters that clean your tank as opposed to chemicals. I have just pumps and a skimmer. Tank will always have some algea; I don't mind. All is healthy. Is your tank fairly new? It is normal in a new set up. Too many water changes cause blooms also.

what exactly is a phosphate sponge? what kind of clean up critters would u suggest? i have about 15 crabs and 2 bumble bee snails, and 1 blue linkia and 1 marble star, i don't know what's going on, but it is killing me! i just got back from a church trip was gone 2 days and the sand is covered in brown algae and the glass is covered in green and a little brown! what i dont understand is one day it will grow back green and the next brown! i only leave my lights on for 8-9 hours, its not that long, my tank has been set up for over a year, and my water quality cant be that bad i have had an anemone since january.

You need to use test kits to check your water not an anenome. I have had my blue carpet for over 3 years and my water has had some times where it had really high nitrates and phos. And I finally quit using tape water and that helped alot, but I still have to watch whats going on with good test kits.

Kent phosphate sponge is a granular media you put in a mesh bag or in whatever your filtering system will allow. I have an emperor biowheel filtration system so I can put in the media cartridge in the back of the filter. You can also buy Phos-Zorb by Aquarium Pharmacueticals and it comes in a bag. It lasts 6-8 weeks then you throw it out and it only costs $4.99. This you can hang by a string in your filter as long as water is able to pass through it.
GET IT, it will help!

:happyfish HI!
Try not to get to bent out of shape over this brown alage! It may just be a cycle of it. I also went through this cycle. I would have brown alage on the sand bed and I would siphon it off in the day and by the next morning it was back! I then reread page 134(Alage:The Good, The Bad, And The Merely Ugly.) of NATURAL REEF AQUARIUMS by John H. Tullock. After a couple of weeks it went away, I also stopped siphoning it off. Now I have been going through a red alage cycle and it is on the end of its cycle! I did use a turkey baster to blow off the read alage from the good alage and rock! PATIENCE is what we all need. If all of your parameters are in range just ride the strom out! I think is is great to watch the changes that take place in my tank over time!

red sea makes this product called red slime remover, it is amazing, it doesnt harm anythign and all of the red algae falls to the bottom , all you have to do is vacuum the next day and the red algae doesnt come back, good luck

You might if you already haven't , check out "My take on things" by Steveweist on Reef Tanks. All about phosphates. Has much info that I needed to know. Constance is full of ggod advice too. There is sooo much to read about and comprehend! But the hobby is worth it!
