I have been accumulating brown algae (diatoms) in my tank. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep this down to a minimum?

How long has your tank been set up? What is your water source? Diatoms are a natural part of having a newer salt system. They will go away on their own. You can wipe them off of the glass and lightly vacume them off of the top of your sand. If you have nitrates, they will feed off of them. They feed off of phosphates as well (if you are not using RO water). They are ugly, but not harmful. They will go away. You can reduce them a little by making sure you have no nitrates or phosphates for them to feed off of.

Thanks for responding. The tank has been set up for a few months now. I have been doing weekly water changes to help with the "brown look". I take my water from home. I have a water system on the house that I use.

Seachem's Phosguard works really well on brown algae problems. Run it for a while, and that should allow you to get ahead of the algae enough that regular water changes will keep the problem under control.

You can use a phosphate eliminator such as phosguard, purapad... You need to look at it from the other direction..what is causing the HA? Most likely PO4,[phosphates} you need to test, using a good test kit such as Salifert. It could be that you are overstocked,do not have enough clean up crew, are overfeeding, have insufficient flow, innefficient protein skimmer,or poor water source. Or a combination of these.
