Hi there. Ive been noticing some of my live rock turning brown and some on my sand and glass. What would be the cause of this. I will post pics up later when i have my camera. I just installed a refugium can this be the cause.

yes it could be. if the brown algae was not around befroe the fuge then its cause is the mini cycle of the LR and LS in the fuge is my guess. will go away..

Its most likely a Diatom Outbreak. If its a new tank its common and normal ,it will go away on its own when your tank matures a bit more.Maybe beef up your CUC and add some more flow .

Flow, crabs, snails, gobies all will help.
Normally it is a buildup of nitrate or phosphate that fuel the rapid growth. Also, if your leaving your lights on for longer than you should, it can cause it.
I prefer to leave my lights on for 8 hours a day, if your leaving them on for 10-12 that could very likely be the culpret.

Not to nitpick...but light won't CAUSE the problem. Light will aid the algae in consuming the problem.

Agree, how long has your tank been up? I went through it around the 4 to 6 week time frame. Since then the color of algea has changed from brown to bright lime green
. Not sure if that is good but was told here, that is the first signs of coraline.
It is now adding some pink/maroon color to it.
Add or alter your flow to cover the bottom and where ever it is growing that will help keep it down. What water are you using? Tap water is a no,
no

Hi there. My tank has been set up for 3 yrs now. I just recently up graded to a 40 gallon sump/refugium. It is no longer brown. I think it was just the refugium going through cycle. My rock has alot more purple and green looks really nice.
