Is every one facing this
When will brown diatom occur?
After cycling process 2 weeks ago and added some coral with plenty of live rock.
Brown alga grown on most of my live rock and in the tank glass,
What cause this?
Is this usual that once the cycling process over?
My tank do have phosphate, but can't remember the value.
Is Silicate and phosphate cause this problem?
Can my live rock be clean.....Do I need to take my live rock out for cleaning?
Is this matter can be solve with cleaning crews, silicate / phospate remover,,,,,,,
Sorry for too much question that I need to know
Need help.
Thank you

it is notmal when starting- trochus snails do an awsome job about cleaning the rock and glass from brown diatoms

Usually it will go away by itself after a 3 or so weeks, but the snails mentioned above and others and fighting or queen conchs will eat on it.

There are a lot of different products you can try to remove the silicates and phosphates.

there is no need to use anything for diatom blooms- they dont happen often- so no need to spend money on chemicals or sponges- that would be for an ongoing problem- a few snails will do the trick- which im sure you will put in at one point or another anyway.

j21 if you read his post you will se that he has phosphates and this will cause a diatom bloom. He needs to use something to remove it.

yes i read that thanks- but the phosphate levels were just from all the new additions- the nutrient levels have changed b/c of the rock and coral- diatom blooms arent hard to get rid of- they will go away on their own- ths the green and red algae that is harder to get rid of, but there is no need to worry- like i said, a few snails will clear it up.

Ok j21 then where did the silicates come from? My guess is the water he is using has phosphates in it. If thats the case then he needs to use something to get rid of it.
khengchuan do you use RO/DI water. And have you tested your water source for the phosphates?

he didnt say he had sillicates in the water he was asking if that could cause a problem- if you have an established well balanced tank adding some tap water wont coat your whole tank in brown algae- unless you local eater is exceptionally high with sillicate- his tank is new, thats all. it is normal for every tank to do that- there is nothing to get worked up about- it will all even out over time
