brown stuff on top on sand

I had ick about a month ago and took all the fish out and put them in a hospital tank. My 85 gallon lf only was left empty during that time and some sort of brown stuff formed on the sand. when I tried to suck it up during a water change it looked like i got it all, but when it settled down it all settled on the bottom again. it is very hard to get out of the tank. since I put my surving fish a powder blue tang and a maroon clown back in the tank, they stir it up. anyone know what this is? Is it a problem? Is it alge?
Thanks Gen

i was having the same problem in my tank and i bought a sleeper goby to sift through the sand. He's done a great job and my sand looks great.

it's called detitrus, every tank gets it and it cany only be cured by a few sand sifting stars, like brittles and serpents

Hey Gen,
Yeah, I have the same problem with my sand too....gonna add more to get the 3-4" dsb in a week though, but I got a sleeper goby to sift it in the meantime. Yes, it does a great job at sifting it, but b/c of all the circulation the fine particles of sand fly all over the tank! I didn't buy all this lr to have the great looking coralline covered with sand! The goby will be traded at the lfs soon! Just a warning!

Are you saying that the Goby is causing your problems with the sand particles all over your LR?
