i just read that you can break them off, thats its what you should do.. before they grow rapidly in your tank, is that true??? my husbands in there now trying to take some off.

you certainly can do that. but i, and most people on here, have found that emeralds keep the algae at bay. so you dont ever see it. also, the emeralds are completely reef safe and dont go after any healthy, active fish. they are wonderful and cheap additions to a tank!

Its been posted and I have also been told not to burst those bubbles as it will release more spores into the tank.....I use a turkey baster, and just place end over bubbles and suck them up into the bulb, and if need be, just twist around on the bubble while applying suction to pull any remains out. Then again how would an emerald crab eat them withut bursting the bubble and getting the so called spores released n the tank.........Since I do not have any emerald crabs the turkey baster works for me and I did not feel like chancing it to do it any other way.

well yes bursting them is bad. but if you do it carefully you can hopefully not burst them.
emeralds prevent the algae from advancing to the stage that we see as a bubble. they eat it when it is much smaller and not real visible stage (recognizable might be a better word). so they prevent it from forming the stage what see as bubble.
simply put, i have had tanks without emeralds and the result was had to remove bubble algae by hand. i have had tanks with emeralds and those tanks ive never had to remove the bubble algae. i just find that emeralds do a much more efficient job than myself....

Not only do the Emeralds work well like others have told you but the Foxface is a great fish to get rid of it. They are poisonous though. but fun to watch.
Here is a link to read about them and a photo:

My LFS turned me onto this fish and I love them now!
