are they bubble algae? Or are they actual gas bubbles? I hear that emerald crabs will eat the bubble algae.

If it's bubble algae, emerald crabs will eat them, but they pop the bubbles in the process which releases pores all over the tank. This somewhat ensures a food source for the crabs. A better but more grueling approach is to remove them by hand while paying attention to not break the bubbles.
As a side note, some actually look for LR with bubble algae because they like how it looks. It doesn't seem to hurt anything, other than potentially overrunning your tank.

It could be algae possibly cyanobacteria that is catching micro bubbles and holding them. Do they release and pop at the surface?
Generally bubble algae is green. I have popped a few while manually removing them from my tank. They have not come back. I think the idea of them spreading from being popped is "honkey" but then again I have a very productive skimmer and it may have removed the spores. A novel idea on how to rid them is to use superglue gel underwater and cover them with the glue. When the glue hardens pull the glue out and it should have the bubble attached.
