Buffett Table as tank stand?

I have a 50 gallon reef tank, but the stand I have doesn't look that nice. A friend is selling me his old buffett. I am moving to a new apartment and was wondering if a 40 inch tall piece of furniture would be safe to put this tank on:

It looks like it could hold 500 lbs or but I'm not sure ... Any thoughts?

I would maybe have a furniture maker take a look at it, it really depends how it is put together, joints and all, last thing you want is 50 gallons of water on your floor!

Concur, most buffet tables were not designed to support this much weight over long periods of time. It's possible to modify it to support the weight.

Maybe, maybe not! Its a nice pc don't ruin it! I would take more to mod it than just making a new stand. Besides stands for 55's aren't that expensive.

At the very least I would remove those legs that it is standing on so that it would sit flat on the floor. 500 lbs or so of water plus your sand and rock is a lot of weight to put on the small surface area of those legs.
