building a sump/fuge

Ok i've done hours of searching and now I'm confused. I have a 55 gal tank (48x12x20) to use as a sump/fuge.Do I set it up with the first compartment for skimmer then the fuge and then the return ? If this is right then I would be using 4 baffles total?Also how many inches should the baffles be from the top? This will be used on 135 gal. thanks in advance
