building my own lighting system?

i know it's possible to do build my own lighting system. it may be a pain in the rear, but i'm trying to explore alternatives to paying $200, $300 and $400 for lighting. i just can't afford it! so, since my boyfriend is an electrician and knows all about electricity, i wanted to get you guy's oppinions on how i could do this and what i would need.
this is what i came up with myself:
for a 4 bulb t5ho fixture i would need:
2 ballasts, 4 bulbs, 8 soccets, 2 powercords, 4 reflectors and a way to fireproof the wood that i make my canopy out of. right? my problem is i dont know if this will work and if i'm missing anything. also, i know there are different products out there i would like to know what some of the ones i should be looking at are?
Thanks for all your help in advance!

i was gonna do a T5 DIY for my tank too. that sounds like all the stuff you need from the research i have done...but hopefully someone who knows more about it will clarify.
i was gonna use a few house drain gutters that go on the edge on the roof instead of building a canopy for my lights. it seems alot more inexpensive than building a canopy.

i was just now thinking about changing it up some though. i was thinking about doing 6 shorter bulbs running the bulbs not the length of the tank but the depth of it. if that makes sense? it would deffinately be different and i would be able to get a really awsome morning, day, evening effect!
