Burnt orange coloring on rocks

It depends on the source of the problem. Do you have a good clean-up crew. Nassarius snails and cerith snails do a good job with the sand. Some possibilities could be that the tank is new and in that case it is very common and will get worse before it gets better, overfeeding, old bulbs...specs on your tank would help to better find a cause.

tanks has been up for about a year...phosphates are down to less than .5...but maybe that is because they are being used up by the diatoms...

This happens a lot with tap water users, is this the case with your water?
Another is that you say set up over a year with no coraline growth, another indicator that tap water is the problem here. Get your self an RO/DI filter Very easy to set up.
If you have only used RO/DI then your over feeding the tank.
If your Not over feeding, then use of dry foods, flake, or not rinseing frozen before use. Frozen not as bad but still can be loaded with phosphates.
These all play a huge part of diatoms problems.
This would be normal in new tanks and will go away on its own.

Have RODI system. It could be overfeeding and yes I don't wash my frozen food. You say no coraline growth, I have noticed the same thing...any thoughts on that?

rinse your food in ro water then feed. Don't use flake food they are the worst.
When was the last time you changed your filters in your RO/DI unit? I had a break out not to long ago. My new light bulbs let me know about too! It was my filters, they needed changing earlier than in the past so I was caught off guard. Do you have a TDS meter to test? I installed an in line one on my unit after that happen.
Coraline do you have any at all?
What is your cal. level?

I do have coraline, not much, I was expecting to see a lot more...really its only on one rock and i think that rock came with it...calcium is around 450. TDS meter is 0...filters are changed every six months, the place auto sends me them.

Take the rock that has it on it and scrape it, put in front of power head while you do it. This will help spread the seeds. Do this after every water change you will see a big change. If that rock is in a low flow area change it to a high flow area. That will help to spread the seeds as well.

Sounds like over feeding to me cut back to 3x per week, and rinse your food first. You will see that little bit of habbit change will help keep your water stable longer.
You should do 1x week water changes untill you read 0 in phosphates. Do you use a sump/fuge at all?

I do use a sump fuge. I have had some phosphate absorber in there now. I have both cut back feedings and lighting and it seems like everything is still brown. I am not sure what else I can do...also green hair algae is growing pretty well from some spots now. Grr...I am using RODI, I just replaced the filters I do 30 gallon water changes every week. It seems like for the last four weeks my nitrates have not even come down at all...they seem to just hover around 30. I don't know what else to try..I want to just pay someone to fix the issue.
