The hardiest butterfly on the market, IMO is the Heniochus. However there's nothing small about a Heni. What size are you shooting for? Some of the smaller butterflies that still have a chance of living, are the Longnose, and the Auriga and Pearlscale are small, but still reach 5" or so and IMO require at least a 75, or 55gal with a ton of loaded live rock.

I disagree. I think Chaes. of the tinkeri complex are the hardiest. They include burgess, declevis, tinker's, mitratus. They all carry a hefty price tag but are not only hardy for a butterfly, but hardy for a marine fish in general. They are long lived, i.e. Waikiki aquarium has a Tnker's butterfly in captivity for over 10 years. They are beautiful. Disease resistant. Eat almost everything. I just sold my Tinker's. This fish ate pellets, algae sheets, anything. Most of these fish reach a max size of 5" with the Tinker's reaching 7" but I have never seen one this big. Here is a pick of my old Tinker's. Good luck. Tim

the raccoon butterfly fish is the hardiest and can reach a size of 8 inches in an aquarium and is beautiful and also one of the cheapest.it is resistant to ink witch is a sickness that kill most butterfly fish off you cant go wrong with this pic. its 8 inch size is not a problem because of its peacful nature. the pearl scale butterfly fish is not at all hardy, and exspensive ,very small, and not as beautiful as the raccoon butterfly fish i have kept many fish i will give you a small list of exstream hardy marine fish fist the green bird wrasse, lunar wrasse, any of the hog fish, saddle wrasse, yellow tang, coral beauty angel ,fox face, sailfin tang, stare and stripes puffer, snow flake moray eel, blue damsel fish, long nose hawk fish, royal gramma, niger tigger, picasso trigger, undulate trigger ,blue jaw trigger get any of these fish and you will have instant succes, there are about ten more but half of them are in the hundreds of dalors the other half drab in appearance

Most of those fishes require very large tanks and/or don't play well with others. Advising someone to keep them willy-nilly is a recipe for trouble.
