Buying a car

A sales manager makes so much on the average purchase, you'd be better off spending it on the car. When I was a mechanic at a large automall, my service manager became the sales manager and let me watch the deals. Everytime the sales manager put his initials on a deal he made $500-$1000 and would do that 5 times a day on a slow day and sometimes 20 times on a busy day. He said (I guess it's true) a bad month he made $20G. Point is with the money they make I don't think it would be worth while to try to bribe a guy who makes at least $300k a year.

What few times I've bought a car at a dealership, I started by looking at the salesman leader board. The top guy doesn't have much incentive to make a good deal, he is already the lead dog. The bottom guy is at the bottom for a reason, but the next to last guy will work his a$$ off to stay out of last. I deal with him.

I get my best deals going to the sales manager. He will throw a bone to the salesman who needs it the most and make sure the deal gets done if at all possible which means he gives up a little of his end just to get the salesman a sale. I got that bit of advice from the woman who owned the dealership where I lived in Montana. I told him what I wanted and what I'd pay and what I had already found. He calls up a salesman and tells him to show me these two trucks. Took about an hour from the time I walked on the lot tell we signed the papers. Got a truck with a 37K sticker for 34K total.

My new theory is get the "manager" on the side, hand him a grand and let him know my "expectations". My thought it pay him the commission and see where that goes...
