calcium reactor? HUH?!?!

Could somebody please explain the purpose/job of a calcium reactor to me. I am unbelievable clueless about this one.

In a nutshell. A calcium reactor uses CO2 and reacts with an aragonite media which is held in a canister and raises calcium levels in the tank which are depleted through Stony corals which use Ca to make their skeletons.
