You don't have to have anything, but it sure helps GREATLY! SPS corals are heavily reliant on calcium, and calcium stability. Calcium reactors help with this. Several people keep SPS tanks quite successfully without calcium reactors, but they are very useful if you do not want to be dosing calcium all the time.

I've never heard anyone say that before... you are breaking down died coral so everything that it took to make the died one’s you are adding to your tank... so it will have magnesium and strontium in it, all the trace elements you need...

yes youre right, my mistake. In theory, a calcium reactor was intended to break down simple calcium carbonate. But now, the reactor media available contains many trace elements as well, although the media's exact composition is not given by the manufacturers.
