I have a PH controller and have never used it to control it. Just as a monitor. Intereasted in it? Also have a solenoid valve with it that has never been used. Was going to put it up for sale but never seem to get around to it.
I gues on smaller tanks you need them to help control your PH from dropping to low with the addition of CO2 in the tank. I run my reactor 24/7 and no PH changes. I think for some people they are needed but for some reason I don't.

PS...
Don't waste you money ordering a high dollar CO2 tank. Go to your local welding shop and get one from them. I picked one up for 50$ and only costs 7$ to refill. You do need a good regulator and needle valve for it though.

just to get things straight, the calcium reactors take place of dosing calcium and buffer. they maintain the calcium and dkh, but do not raise them.

Jason, My calcium levels went up a bit when I added mine to the tank. From around 400ppm to around 450ppm now. I'm not too sure about the whole theroy behind them not rasing calcium. <img src="graemlins//yeahright.gif" border="0" alt="[yeahright]" />
Most tanks can be maintained with kalk. The larger tanks with more stonies and coraline that are really dependent for growth off the calcium are the ones that have a hard time raising the level.

I use Aqua Medic Calcium reactors. It is a German company and is kind of hard to get a hold of though they have won more world awards and are the world's leading aquarium filter manufacturer. I would purchase the intire system, very easy to set up and run. Though I am not a super supporter of the do it yourself movement. I personally don't like the hassle of the learning curve. Unless you are making something new or are improving an already existing product.
