Calling out Goodwin: Atlantic Blue Tang

So since I have never seen anyone have more Tangs than Goodwin, I figured I would ask what you thought about these. (If anyone else knows anything, by all means, post) I didn't know if there are anything that I should know about this type. I have researched them, but didn't know if I missed anything that makes them not good tank mates. I noticed that no one on here or any other forum has them. I have a Yellow now that is pretty small, and I was thinking about adding an Atlantic Blue also. If anyone has any input also, let me know. Thanks in advance

If you do get them try to get a 2"+ juv. They pretty much need to be in a school to do well. Many break out in random bacterial infections. In general, not a fish to get. Thats not to say that they cant be kept but just that they tend to not do good. The only real sucess story i have seen (not that its the only one) had one that was bought at 3" while still yellow and kept in a 200g with yellow tangs. They look similar when young so they schooled and the fish has lived for 3+ years. So it is doable.

I was thinking about it. I ordered one at work last week because it was finally available to order, and I have been looking to maybe get one, so if i like it I will buy it. Good thing is too, that I can keep an eye on it at work until I want to buy it.

Atlantic blue tangs are very difficult tangs to keep. Most do not live very long in the aquarium before breaking down with a bacterial infection. Your absolute best bet is to get this fish as a very small juvenile. Even then, they are surely difficult to keep. Your yellow tang is likely going to harass the fish to death as well because they have the same color body. Definitely one of the three "common" tangs I would stay away from (Atlantic blue, Achilles, clown)

My advice comes from a ton of personal experience. I have done a lot of research on these fish and have viewed them constantly in an attempt to find a way to keep one. The only ones I have ever seen live REALLY well were the tank raised ones I received at a LFS one time several years ago when I worked there.
Two will not work. These fish are a schooling fish. Either go with one, or go with several. I really believe they do best in schools. Any public aquarium who keeps them, keeps them in a high number.

hey brandan,, i never had one but two friends tried neither made it past a month. the only one i know survived was at a wholesaler that has it in a 600 gallon vat that is as close to an ocean enviroment as you can get. he has had is 3 yrs. eats only macro algaes and he clamed coral slimecoating. I guess working at a store if you can afford to experiment by buying it a really good price give it a whirl.

You're going to order all 5 of those at once? None of those are easy fish to keep. The Caribbean Blue Tang and Rock Beauty I have heard are especially tough. If you do want to keep all those though, try one at a time rather than all at once.

I did not research this fish well before I bought. I have a juvi. that can actually hold it's own with my yellow tang. I have several tangs and they seem to all school together, eat together etc. I have only had mine for about 9 months but no problems yet.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. Like I said, he can stay at work until I buy him or until a customer does. If he is there more than a month and seems healthy then I can buy him. If my yellow picks on him. I can always find a good home for him somewhere around here. Thanks for all the input, if anyone else has something new to say, by all means, post.
