When dealing with buying a new digital is it the "megapixels" or the "optical zoom" that should be the higher number?
I currently have a Sony 3.2 megapixel 3x optical zoom. When I take close up shots of my tank like something on the glass etc it is nothing but a blur. I use the macro feature, no zoom as I am right there and it is very blurry. Any suggestions of what is the best features out there?

Optical zoom is just how close you can zoom, megapixels are very important.
Im a professional photographer and my camera i use for work is 12.4 megapixels.
Try using a tripod so that your movement doesnt jiggle the camera.

Thanks for your reply. So if you were buying a compact digital without breaking the bank what size if pixel should I look for as the min for the best pictures? Also what is your opinion about the Nikon cameras?

hey I've owned 5 digital cameras and I'm no professional like Nudilove but I would shoot for at least 5 megapixels .. optical zoom doesn't really matter .. like Nudilove said it's just how far you can zoom in and if you plan on taking pictures of your tank with it that doesn't matter too much .. also look into the fujifilm cameras .. they're relatively cheap for what a deal they can give you

Debbie, i would look at the SONY H1 or H2 i have both and love them. You can steal an H1 right now since the H2 just came out. the H1 has 5.1 meg pix. and 12x optical zoom with 5x digital past the 12x. so you can take a pic of something zoomed in 12x then edit the same pic to zoom in farther, here is an example...
