Depends on how extreme you want to get I guess. I use a Fuji s9000 - not an slr but real close. this is some of my shots with is http://www.flickr.com/photos/89593558@N00/2314690301/
as for a comparison my mom uses a canon power shot G5 and a nikon d40 the canon is lighter for her and seems to get almost as good of shots. But, she just got a new lens for the nikon and really likes the capabilities. Here is her link..

Hope this helps at all.. LMK

i basically use my camera for tank shots, and taking a few pics of the dog and other odds and ends around the house. i get some really good macros here and there with my old cybershot dscf707, but i notice that on certain pics, i can't get the true color. and sometimes my cybershots color viewfinder goes black and white. it's time for something new.
i was debating getting a point and shoot camers for 150 or so, but i hold on to a camera for a very long time. it makes sense to purchase a decent one.
so, the d40 over the d60?

The truth is a camera is only as good as its lens. I purchased the XTi along with Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L lens and I've been really happy with the results.

d40 and d60 are the same except for a few minor upgrades on the 60 like automatic sensor cleaning and the display rotates with the camera and a few other little thing performance wise they are the same. i just got the d60 in a package deal and i love it. as said b4 the lens is where its at heres some shots with the stock 18-55mm https://www.saltwaterfish.com/vb/showthread.php?t=328474
now im just saving up for a sweet macro lens. as for nikon in general i find it very user friendly, if u do go with the 40 make sure its the D40x not the D40... X is a newer version and has 10MP compared to 8MP. also best buy has the a few different package deals with the D60 until AUGUST.2
