Not sure, I dont get close enough, I send my hubbie's hand in (if need comes) and he says no, but I still wont come close to them.

Actually YES they can sting a human...But thier toxin is too weak to produce any affect to us.At the most you may feel a slight,,,Very slight,,, numbness in the hand a few minutes later.
You will however feel it sticking to your hand,This is a good sign that the anemone is doing well.
An anemone that has lost it's ability to sting(stick) is not doing well...

Thanks for the advise. I was moving my coral around and the anenome was floating around and I bumped it. I had a reaction on my hand. Nothing big but I will watch next time to make sure he is out of the way.

That's a good point lilbuddy... I have had a green carpet sting me too. Thing made my hand all numb while I was working at the LFS. Made cleaning the tanks interesting... and sloppy. But beat getting the urchin spine under my thumb nail. :D

yes they sting but it doesnt hurt like a bee sting to say. they just stick to you and maybe you will have a little reacction to it. a carpet got me also and i had a rash like poison ivy and it itch for about a week but no pain. i think carpets have the most potent sting?

the sticky feeling is actually all these microscopic threads that are ejected at extreme pressure out of the anemone and into its prey (or your hand). i've heard that if you're allergic to bee stings you may want to avoid contact. and under the fingernail has got to be the worst place i've ever heard of to have a sea urchin spine (my hands are still twitching from just reading it). how'd you manage that?

yeah, you can put them with aggressive species, though there are a few speices, like triggers, that'll nip at their tentacles. I think angels might view them as a snack too. some small pacific octopus whose name I can’t remember. there’s probably others.

Mr. Salty - Doesn't the level of sting depend on the type of anemone? I have seen posts on this board from people who have been stung by certain anemone's that said they felt like going to the hospital, felt nautious, etc...

Yea.Yea.Yea.I've also read posts that people claim thier clownfish took a chunk out of thier finger...
I seriously doubt if any anemone could possibly cause more than a slight numbness for a few minutes. Unless you are by chance allergic to it's sting...
I had to check my LARGE(20") carpets foot for cuts by turning it upside down in my hands when I got him.I must have been stung 1000 times in 10 seconds,,but never felt more than a slight numbing.

I haven't had any bad experiences myself. I can only go by what I read from others. I guess you have a point...
So basically, there are a lot of babies out there....LOL...
