I would not do it... It may kill someone..
I really don't know. No one does, only the building contractor. It may hold but I do not want to be the one who says it will and then see it fall..
You could call the landlord and find out though...

You might want to check with your buiding super. Some buildings in the city restrict tanks. If yours doesn't, I think most buidings in the city can handle that weight. Imagine all the furnitures and stuff that it holds...they're way lot heavier than your tank.

NYWATERS,
Can a tank go through a floor? YES!!! So can a TV, or a fridge or a small chihuha (sp?) if the floor is bad.... Life-long apartment dweller here. Do yourself a huge favor not to mention the downstairs neighbor, have the building owner or an engineer check it out and see what they have to say... NOBODY here can answer the question whether or not it is safe. If that tank is just nothing but water only you are still talking about 3/4 ton of weight on a relatively small footprint. If the landlord says it is cool then have fun my friend and congrats on your new tank!
P.S. You do have renters insurance right???????? <img src="graemlins//eek.gif" border="0" alt="[eek]" /> ;)

I reinforced my floor with floor jacks under the house for my 120. Wasn't really worried about it, but floor jacks cost like $14.00 and it is more like insurance. This won't help you much though since you are in an apartment. The people under you may get worried though.

Rockster,
The approx. weight of a full (just water) of a 175gallon tank is 2100lbs.. Add rock, stand, canopy, filters, etc...
Name me one piece of furniture or appliance that ways more then that? A water bed is heavy but is actually less per square foot than a frige is. That is the key to weight, spread it out.
Not arguing or even trying to make you mad.. Just pointing out that it would be the heaviest thing in the appt.
NYWATERS,
I would not chance it but , It is up to you.

Well, I've got a 75 on the second floor of my apartment. I thought about it falling through, but now my mind is really turning. Oh well, I like my clown trigger more than the cranky 90 year-old lady that lives below me!

Keep in mind that standard building code is 40 lbs/sqft so with a 6'x2' tank you are looking at roughly 175 lbs/sqft on your tank. I would at least talk to the super or something. Good Luck.

WELL 1st off ta;k to the building sup and ask where the support walls are and set up shop there. Get two 2x4's to support the stand(this will take some of the strain off the floor) if the walls are near the window just do like i did and cover the back with black paper and make sure the a/c is on if you have an iron stand like i did a couple of years ago get a couple of 2x4's put them under the stand to distribute the weight. this worked for me a few years ago on the 3rd floor and i had an 125g tank 90g 2 55g 29g and a 20g tanks all set up in my apartment and only one craced floor board in 3 years thats when i got the 2x4's. so thats my 1st hand exsperiance.

I recently ran across a killer deal on a 175 das, but I had to pass it up because I too live on the second floor of my apt. They would not let me have a 175 on the second floor in my apt. and were not too thrilled I had a 55 (I dont think that small is to worry over) but they siad a deffinate no.
