I just recently get a 75 gallon and I was woundering if there was any shark under the sun that could be happy in that size tank? Please do not just shoot it down I know there is probibly no shark that will fit.
My LFS said that a bambo shark will do fine in a 75 gallon. They have one in a 55 now. It is 10 months old and it about 5 or 6 inches.
They said it will slow down its growth if it is in a smaller aquarium.
Thanks,
Drew

I totally agree from experience.
I have friends in Miami that run 2800(give or take) Gallon custom tanks with Sharks.
The rule of thumb with Aquariums in general is to have a tank that's large enough to let the species have REAL room to swim and one that's large enough that they can PROPERLY grow.
I use to have a Clown Knife(freshwater of course) in a 10gallon that had rediculous stuned growth due to the small tank. I put him in a 29 Gallon high and he grew like crazy.
Just cause your Local store says it's ok and has something setup.....well that doesn't mean jack to be blunty honest. Lots of dealers with tell ya whatever they think you wanna hear so they can make a nice markup off a relatively rare species like a shark.
Some say 300 Minimum for Sharks, I say 500 absolute minimum for sharks from experience for what I'd call an *ethical sharktank*. In that they have real room to swim. Then again, many/some think an *ethical sharktank* is an oxymoron.
Peace

I see. Thanks for the imput. but is it true that a shark will only grow to the size of the tank? BTW the LFS owner is a family friend.

Besides sharks what agressive fish will be able to fit in a 75 gallon tank?? Also what should I think about the LFS... I know the owner very well and it is not a scam. But he has a 10 month old banded shark in a 55 or 65 gallon tank and it is only 5 or 6 inches long. He says if there is no room to grow it wont.... what should I think?? I mean its right here in front of my eyes and I have seen it tehre for a while.. Its very healthy.....
Soo confused

What I was trying to say was there is no way a 10 month bamboo is only 6 inches. All I have hatched were all that size if not bigger at birth.

Aquarium size does not have any influence on growth directly. However, if the aquarium is too small, the fish will be stressed and indirectly, this will cause his growth to be slowed slightly. However, like stated, the only things that will directly affect growth is feeding (frequency and quality) and temperature.
If that was my lfs, I would be very discouraged from buying from them because it seems like they don't really care about your needs as a customer. It seems that the lfs owner (whether he is a nice guy or not) only cares about himself because anyone who cared about the customer before the dollar in their wallet would not even think about selling someone a shark for a 75 gallon tank. That is appalling. I work at a LFS and if my boss or anyone for that matter said that a shark would live healthy and happily in a 75 gallon aquarium I would correct them on the spot because that is totally incorrect information. They have the shark in a 55 right now because it is only meant to be his temporary home. A fish store brings fish in only to sell them. They do not have the intentions of keeping any fish for a long term basis. I am not saying do not buy from this LFS, however, for now on, I would definitely get a second opinion on things that this store tells you.

As for the aggressive fish in a 75, I cannot recommend too much to you. The only things that you can really keep in a 75 long term is a dwarf lion, hawkfish, a couple different types of wrasses, a few different types of smaller groupers, and toby puffers. Regular size puffers get way too big for a 75, volitan lions get too big for a 75, and triggers need more swimming room as they mature. Trust me, I learned this the hard way. I have had my 75 "aggressive" tank up and running for about a year and a half now and I am setting up a 210 this summer for them to move into. Any more questions, feel free to post!

WEll said Lion_crazz.
As I said above. I know and have known lots of Shark lovers. They all have happy and healthy Sharks in HUGE tanks.:D I couldn't imagine any species of Shark in anything less. Even a 155 bow just isn't cutting the mustard in the long term.
Peace
