Yes, you most deifinitely can add live sand. It will help seed the rest of the sand making it all live sand eventually.

great, I've been reading some posts and thought it would be a good idea to have a dsb. Will the ls also seed rock too?

If you have lr it will not need to be seeded. If you have dead rock oe base rock you can add some more lr to seed it. It will take some time but will work.

do you just pour the "dead" sand on top of the existing live sand bed...that won't upset the bacteria and such??

Will the same work with crushed coral? Tank has been up about 2 months and we already have fish, but I think the added bacteria, etc, would be good for our tank. Don't want to upset anything, though. Suggestions?

I just added live sand to my tank that already had crushed coral. I took out the majority of the coral and then just put the sand down on top of what was left. The water will be cloudy for awhile and then clear up. Looks nice except if you have any thing that digs, they eventually dig the crushed coral up to the surface.

You did this with existing fish remaining in the tank? Did this effect them at all? I currently have a yelow tang, passer angel, purple pseudo, and yellow tailed damsel. I'm ready to move up but want to get some more bacteria in the tank first. Thought the sand would help.

I have 2 yellow tail damsels in there and they did just fine...I'm not sure about the tangs and what not...but the ocean does get cloudy from now and then and fish survive..I would wager they will be just fine. The cloudiness only lasts a few hours.
