Can I get Live Sand off the Gulf of Mexico?

Hey all,
I have a question on obtaining my own LS. I live near the Gulf of Mexico and often go boating with friends. Is it possible to dive/snorkle down in the ocean and bring up my own LS? Is this sand going to be full of silicate or other "not so great" things? Should I be doing this in any particular place of the ocean floor, or should I not even try?

don't even bother. that sand is so polluted you wouldn't believe it. I would never put it in my tank, just buy the live sand in the bags. If money is an issue, buy dead sand 95% and only 5% live sand and it will seed the dsb.

the sand from HD is blasted from the sandstone and very clean, the beach sand has been soaking up the pollution for years.

it is also sterilized, I believe
and, if You are going ot get your own, then go out miles and dive deep to get it.
