Can I make my own filters?

I have 2 Mellinuim 3000 hang-on power filters. Can i save a few bucks and make my own filters out of A/C filter material? It looks like the same stuff that the mellenium filters are made of except with no carbon pellets. I have a lot of LR if it makes a diference.

if you have a lot of LR and a dsb, you already made the best filter imaginable, IMO so yes you can make your own filter
Now, as to cut corners, I would not, unless you know for sure it is exactly the same, short cuts in this hobby are often lethal. Many AC and heater filters have metal frame work inside, so if you do attempt it, be very careful not to get them, metals do not mix in SW tanks.
