You cannot just bring anything home. If there is something that frequents the beach that you go to then research the needs of that animal. They live in the vast ocean. Would you grab a deer out of the wild and try to keep it in the house?

Very risky.
Depends on what kind of reefer you want to be. I have been on both sides over the years, but I'm glad to be a responsible reefhead now.
Research dietary habits and potential problems upon death of anything you plan to introduce to your system.
Sanddollars are sand grunge munchers that need lots of grazing room as well as lots of food. Hence finding lots of dead ones around the live ones. I have tried to keep them before with no good results past 2 weeks or so. Then the tank goes green when they die.

Wisenheimer

I picked deer because they are everywhere in NY. Yeah, they can be cared for at home. I made the house point because the deer would be fine in an environment that is alright for him, such as a barn. In the house it wouldn't be so good. If this person had a 400 gallon lagoon then the sand dollar would be alright, but in a smaller tank, that is a different story.
Seriously though, you cannot just pick up whatever at the beach. If you want it to live then you need to know what requirements it has.

Got a lot of respect for you. You are asking questions that "new to saltwater" people wouldn't ask. I was always told that there is no such thing as a dumb question.

The only dumb question is the one that isn't asked. Never be afraid to ask anything!

Really? Then certainly not worth it. You should check out the collection laws where you live.

I checked FWC's website and could not find where they are TOTALLY unable to collect live.
If there is something different, I would like to see the info and link.
For the record, as I stated before, I would not suggest keeping them as I have had no success in the past with them.
