I am planning to change my establish fowlr tank to sand. Currently now i have cc a friend of mind has sand fowlr that is been running for years in his salt water tank he is willing to give me his sand bed and fish, he is getting out of the hobby. My question is how do i transfer the existing sand in to my tank by not hurting the fish or the balance. Do i stir the sand up and clean it like you would have brought new sand with the existing salt water in it or should i drain the tank down then scoop in big pieces and transfer in my tank. My plan was empty my tank rock, fish and water in a vac that hold to 150 gallon of water then do the swap, after that then i will slowly introduce my water, fish and rock back in if there is better way of approaching this the please help me.....

so do both these tanks have fish in them now? I think this would have to be something gradual cause from what ive read a large transfer of sand, stirring it up and what not, will cause water conditions to jump. So I would say don't do it all at once, do portions of the sane every day or something...how big are the tanks?

he should not take all of his sand out at once, he should do it over a period of time. and same for you with your CC, take out like a cup a day and replace it with his sand. If he takes all his sand out at once and disturbs all the crap in it, he will spike his water params and have issues.

then I'd see maybe see if you can get some rubbermaid containers, put your rock fish and if you have coral in them, with your powerheads and heater, change it out, let it settle, check your params. and then add the stuff back in. I'm pretty sure though if you change it out all at once you will get a spike but let's see who else chimes in.

Well that was my plan putting them in a 100 gallon vac and do the transfer with the cc and sand. Then slowly put back all the water from my tank back in. Thanks for your suggestion i really appreciate the help from everybody trying to make this successful.
