Can someone help me fast? sealant question

My pump has been spewing out bubbles and we found the place where air was entering. We have some sealnt from the LFS that is non toxic to fish but also says that you should wait 48 hours before exposing to water. Is this because it is toxic before it dries completely? It is out of the tank now but I don't have much to aerate the tank with. Would it be ok to put back in the tank? The piece doesn't really come in contact with water, but I want to be rather than sorry.

It depends on the sealant. Likely the instructions say that because the sealant won't cure if water is exposed to it.
