Can Tang be a "Peacekeeper"?

I made the stupid mistake of getting a pair of Velvet Damsels as the first fish in my tank (I will never get Damsels again).......
One of them is super aggressive and relentlessly goes after the other.
Since then, I have added 5 more fish over time.....each of them going through the "Damsel Test" and finding a balanced relationship with the aggressor. Now I have added another fish...a Royal Gramma......and the Damsel ruthlessly attacked the Gramma, taking a bite out of the tail fin.
The POINT is that I have a Yellow Tang that seems to intervene and "protect" the two bullied fish. Do fish do that? Do they play the part of "peackeeper"?

Actually, your tang is probably reminding the offending damsel that it's not the boss of the tank...just a simple pecking order establishment and keeping the riff-raff in line.
