Can we get a consensus on denitrators?

Let's for once get a consensus on denitrators. Who has/uses them? Do they or don't they work? How about the merits of the different types? I have a nitrate problem (of course) and would buy one if the general feeling about them is positive.

I don't know if you'll get a concensus, but at least you'll get a couple "opinions"..:D
Here's mine...
I have seen them, I have used them...They worked for me and those that introduced me to them...
Some designs are "high maintaince", some are no maintaince...Most are inefficient for "practical" purposes...(size vs. results)...
I do not use one now...
There are "better" more practical ways to remove/export NitrAtes...

Good idea, only I'm at a loss...
I have a 55 gallon
I have a DSB of 4" with aragonite
I am lightly stocked
I feed only once a day
I have a good clean up crew
I have a protein skimmer
I have no traditional "pad" or "sponge" filtration
I have around 75 lb of live rock
I do biweekly 10% water changes
Yet my nitrates are always over 40. Go figure. So that's why I'm interested in denitrators.

The DAY after I took my DSB out my skimmer pulled out 1/3 of what it was when I had my DSB.

are you trying to suggest that DSB's are bad???

They have some benifits but Imo they due more bad then good. I would vaccum some out as you do water changes little by little until you get down to 1-1.5 inches.:D

I built a denitrator and was amazed at the results.
Until I noticed it was stopped up and wasn't doing anything at all... I'm not sure whether it had anything to do with my nitrate decline or not, currently it is not helping them stay at 5pppm.
I am afraid to unclog it for fear that it may release harmful things into the tank due to the decay of the anerobic bacteria.
The way my luck has been running, I probably have a batch of botullinum toxin stewing away in there, and I'd decide to clean the thing only to wipe out the southside of Savannah.:notsure:

How long has your tank been up and running, what are you feeding and how much, what organisms do you have in your tank? The idea of vaccuming out your gravel is a good one, also when you do a water change try taking a turkey baster and blowing off your rock work to get any detritus that may have settled.
