Can You Drill A 40 Gallon Long??

I wanted to know if you could drill a 40 gallon long fish tank ? i wanted to drill 2 holes for bulkheads on the back side of the tank not the bottom of the tank?or should i just have it drilled by a store it is currently already running but i want to have it drilled or should i just by an overflow box for my tank?BTW how do overflow boxes work?

a overflow is just 2 compartments, 1 in the tank and 1 on the back with a u tube to draw the water from one to the other. the 2 compartments are connected with the u tube draining water thru them and down into the sump.
