Yes, coral will begin to consume each other if it's too close. So watch out with those mushrooms, because they'll take over and eat your prized SPS.

Sure can, will start turf wars in your tank just as in the wild, to see which coral wins out on space. This happens via sweeper tentacles, chemical warfare, and crowding out of space and or light. Probably missising some things but yes too much can be bad. This is one of the reasons why people start fragging and selling coral frags because they run out of room.

lets not forget chemical starvation. if you have a ton of sps and not enough calcium to go around...
