can you have too large of a filter?

I'd like to put a high-quality canister filter on my two little aquapods, but all the canisters I can find are for larger tanks (50+ gallons) and these are little 24 gallon tanks. All the ones for smaller tanks that I can find are really cheap.
Is it possible to have "too much" filter in an aquarium, or is the general consensus "the bigger the better" ?

The answer is no. I have a 90g tank and I run 2 canister filters, both are rated for 100g tanks...so that is filtration by their standards for a 200g tank.
The more filtration the better...when you "clean" your canisters don't use freshwater on the pads or reusable media. Swish them around in saltwater to loosen materiel and then place them back into the filter.
If you kill the good bacteria on canister media, you will get a small ammonia spike and in the end nitrate spikes.
