Clowns with more black on them are True Percs - also there is a way to tell with their eyes but I can't remember how. I have 2 false and 1 True in my 35gal. hex tank. I'll look tonight when the light comes on and see if there really is a difference with their eyes. (I just got the true perc last night.)

Because there are soo many different color morphs in these species it can be difficult to tell. Typically the black lines that separate the white stripes from the orange body are much more pronounced and often bleed into the orange body area of a True Perc. Whereas a false perc has narrow defined lines that dont often bleed out. However there are circumstances where this method cannot be used.
2 other theory's I have heard of are, counting the spines on the dorsal. One species has one more than the other (I forget which). And the other is their eyes, a True Perc has a bright orange circle around their pupil. A false perc has a darker tea colored circle around theirs. So far I have found the eye method pretty accurate but I dont know which one if any is the "right" way to tell.
