researche it and yes it can be done, but i decided to go with boughten, b/c the time frame involved, with curing alone, it has to be done properly, or it could destry everything, it is somewhat risky here
but it does definitely have benefits, like cost and more so, you can custom build your shapes

I have tried to make my own rock...what a freakin ugly mess!!! garf is where i got my info...with them being only 10 miles from my house, and had a friend who worked there i figured that i could do it...but they didnt turn out even close to what i wanted them to look like...not to mention the time spent in making it...garf themselves have this practice down!!!the rocks i made didnt even look anything close to natural!!!check out this article good luck to you!!!

try this site you can get some base rock a lot less than live rock and it's the same rock but dry so just seed it with a bit of live rock

Never tried it and it sounds messy to me, but the garf premade stuff is really nice. I have the arch and outside of waiting for the corraline to grow on it, it fits right in with my other live rock with a lot of openings and caves in it.
