Yes I have Fijii LR, Hawaiian island Base Rock that is now LR, and Florida aquacultured rock. The benefits of mixing is it can look kind of cool. I have a 4" DSB and 60lbs of LR in my 29g. I use no filters. I don't even use a protein skimmer. I do have a refugium down below that is is not connected to. It's a ten gallon fuge with a DSB LR a bunch of macro algae. Every week I take 1g of water out of the fuge and put it on the display tank. I then replenish the fuge with aged SW. This has been working well, but soon I will be adding an external overflow.

There are many benifits of mixing different types of lr in your tank. Fist you will be getting a lot of diversity. Weather it be the life in/on the rock, or the different looks. I think a mix looks really nice.
As far as needing a filter, that is one of those questions that dosen't have a right or wrong answer. As stated above if you have a dsb and a lot of lr then you can run a tank without a filter. However I personally recommend some type of filter. At least something that can remove particulate material from the water.

u can mix lr to make it look cool. like everyone sed, u dont really need a filter, but its good to have one. actually, if u had enuf lr for good biofiltration, u could just put in like 2 powerheds for circulation cuz u should have sum water movement
